State-run Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has announced appointment of Dr Alka Mittal as the Chairman and Managing Director of the company. Mittal who is Director, Human Resources at ONGC has been given an additional charge as the CMD f the company.

The announcement was made on the official Twitter handle of the state-run explorer.

“ONGC Director (HR) Dr @AlkaMit26713758 has been entrusted with additional charge of ONGC CMD, making her the first woman to head the #Energy major,” ONGC Tweeted.

She becomes the first woman to head the energy major, news agency ANI reported on Monday. Mittal was given the additional charge after incumbent Subhash Kumar superannuated on December 31, 2021.

Maharatna ONGC is the largest crude oil and natural gas Company in India, contributing around 71 per cent to Indian domestic production. Crude oil is the raw material used by downstream companies like IOC, BPCL, HPCL and MRPL (Last two are subsidiaries of ONGC) to produce petroleum products like Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene, Naphtha, and Cooking Gas LPG.
