Now landlines will work like smartphones in Rajasthan, as state-owned BSNL is upgrading its telephone exchanges to enable SMS, chatting and video calls on landlines. BSNL has already started upgrade work in various districts of Rajasthan. These exchanges will reportedly be upgraded with Next Generation Networking (NGN) technology. The state-run telecom service provider has already upgraded exchanges with new technologies in Bundi and Hindoli, remaining exchanges will be upgraded within the next few days, a PTI report said.

BSNL landlines will now provide services like  chatting, messaging (SMS), video calling and personal ring back tone (PRBT), which are available on mobile phones. To avail of these facilities, landline receivers have to be upgraded with IP phone. Besides, landline customers will now be able to avail of landline services and plans from anywhere by connecting with a phone.

When landline users are outside their home, landline calls can be received on mobile handsets, the report said. 2G towers are also upgraded to provide 3G services. Digital exchanges will also offer you a host of phone plus services, converting your old basic telephones to a sophisticated tool which can be used for a variety of applications. The telecom service provider will provide services in rural areas at lower cost than urban areas.

With the upgrade, fast internet services would also be accessible even in rural areas. The BSNL landline subscribers can buy separately the CLIP display device from market to see number of callers before receiving calls. This would help users to trace malicious caller.
