Reliance Jio today launched JioPhone 2, which is the successor to its popular JioPhone, at the 41st Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries (RIL) in Mumbai. Offering an entry-level feature phone to first-time users and those who want to keep their phone bills low and yet have an enriching and fulfilling online experience using the Jio 4G network, the JioPhone 2 will be priced at Rs 2,999 and will be available from August 15.

The JioPhone 2 comes with significant improvements over the old JioPhone, which is priced at Rs 1,500 - in the new offer the users can exchange their existing feature phone for a brand new JioPhone 1 for just Rs 501!. Apart from a change in design, JioPhone 2 sports a physical QWERTY keypad and a 2.4-inch QVGA screen. The latest device is larger than the first JioPhone, and closely resembles the earlier Blackberry phones. The phone runs only on 4G, and will be SIM-locked to the Jio network with VoLTE and VoWiFi connectivity for placing voice calls, said BGR report.

The JioPhone 2, which runs on KaiOS and comes with dual-SIM connectivity, sports a 2,000mAh battery, support for storage expansion through a micro-SD card, a 2-megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera and a mono speaker, the report said, adding that buyers will also get 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, FM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC connectivity in the new phone.

The telecom firm has also announced support for WhatsApp and YouTube for the JioPhone KaiOS platform, along with Facebook. Apart from introducing these apps, Jio has its own suite of apps and services available for the platform, including JioTV, JioExpress Music along with other content services that will further boost the new phone's functionality.

From August 15, the JioPhone 2 is set to go on sale. The earlier JioPhone has witnessed big success due to its low price and content offerings, and is still the leading feature phone by sales in the country. The JioPhone 2 is expected to boost sales for the feature phone, as well as increase adoption of Jio’s 4G-only mobile network.

Mukesh Ambani said, "Today, we are launching a brand new JioPhone scheme, JioPhone “Monsoon Hungama”. Under this offer, by exchanging your old feature phone, you can get a brand new JioPhone for an effective entry price of just Rs 501."
