A major fire broke out at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) plant on Tuesday, 25 May, afternoon in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. "A fire incident occurred in one of the crude processing units of HPCL’s Visakh Refinery at 3 PM on 25 May 2021," the company tweeted.

HPCL confirmed on Twitter that there was no casualty. "All people are accounted and are safe. Fire is extinguished completely. Except for the particular unit where the fire occurred, all other process units of Visakh Refinery are operating normally," it said.

Safety measures and firefighting was activated immediately, the company said. The fire has been extinguished, and other refinery operations are normal.

Talking to PTI, Visakhapatnam District Collector V Vinay Chand said that the fire was doused quickly, averting major damage. "There were no casualties nor was anyone injured in the mishap," he said.

What happened at the plant?

As per the news agency, the fire broke out in the crude distillation unit-3 in the HPCL old terminal.

The fire sensors immediately came abuzz, alerting the staff around.
