Indian internet - expanding horizons:

Even as the Indian e-commerce space has been growing at a rapid pace, COVID has brought about multiple new dimensions. First, it has accelerated growth in well-entrenched verticals like E-tailing, with a pickup in online grocery shopping. Second, verticals like Ed-tech, Health-tech, and gaming have emerged very strongly. It is also changing the main driver of adoption from low pricing to convenience, resulting in better unit economics across the board.

India has a fast-growing mobile internet base, with more than 650 mn mobile broadband subscribers and 100 mn broadband subscribers added last year. Smartphone penetration, too, is healthy, at 50% of mobile devices. The Indian internet and e-commerce ecosystem has been buzzing over the past few years and India is already home to more than 30 unicorns. In 2018-2020, more than US $20 bn of private deals have occurred in the Indian technology and e-commerce space; and some of these companies may go public in the next 1-2 years.

Listed internet companies include Affle India, Infoedge and MakeMyTrip. Among the large listed companies, Jefferies also feature a few companies that are actively leveraging the power of the internet for market share gains. These include HDFC Life, Hindustan Unilever, and Titan. Some of the attendees from the unlisted internet space include in the summit are Cartrade (auto trade), Dream 11 (fantasy sports platform), Delhivery (ecom logistics), Dhani services (fintech), Lenskart (e-com eyewear), Mobile Premier League (gaming), Paytm (fintech), Pharmeasy (medical ecom), Pine labs (technology), PolicyBazaar (fintech), Razorpay (fintech) and Swiggy (food delivery).
