India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki is going to launch a new electric vehicle by 2020. Maruti Suzuki WagonR electric vehicle was showcased at the MOVE Global Mobility Summit in New Delhi this year. According to reports, the new WagonR-based electric vehicle will most likely be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki's plant in Gujarat.  The battery manufacturing facility of Toyota is also coming up there, a Businessline report suggests.

WagonR EV will be the first offering from the partnership between Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. The latter has announced that it will help Maruti Suzuki in developing an ultrahigh-efficiency powertrain.

Apart from technical support from Toyota, it will also produce lithium-ion batteries, electric motors and other related components at its Gujarat facility. With this technological support, the cost of production of Maruti Suzuki is expected to be low. Maruti Suzuki may keep the price of their EVs quite aggressively.

Maruti Suzuki may also launch the next generation WagonR in India sometime later this year, as part of all-new lightweight platform, bringing down the weight of the car considerably.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR is one of the most popular cars of the company due to its performance record. WagonR, first launched in 1999 and available in both manual and auto gear shift option, is sold over 20 lakh units so far. The model has seen many updates over the years. The car has ABS and Auto Gear shift, which makes sure safety. The WagonR model is at present manufactured at its plant in Gurugram.
