In an important development, the central government has planned to expand public Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the nation, as reported by Zee Business reporter Ambarish Pandey.

The efforts by government results in 2.5 times increase in charging stations in nine mega cities over the last four months.

Earlier, this year, in an attempt to promote the electric vehicles, the central government has issued new guidelines. The facilities included - no license required for charging station, EV public charging infrastructure and revenue sharing model. 

In this regard, it has to be noted that an additional installation of 678 public EV charging stations between October 2021 to January 2022 have taken place nine cities. 

Currently, nine cities account for about 940 of India's 1640 public EV chargers. Furthermore, the EV charging stations to be set up by OMCs across the country in prominent cities and highways. 

As per the new guidelines, the infrastructure for public EVs has be rolled out in a phased manner. According to government instructions, "the same tariff will apply to battery charging stations (BCS). The tariff applicable to domestic consumption will apply to domestic charging. 

Phase 1 (one to three years): According to the 2011 census, all mega cities with a population of more than 4 million, all existing expressways connected to these mega cities and important highways connected to each of these mega cities can be taken up for coverage. A list of these mega cities and existing connected expressways has been prepared.

Phase 2 (three to five years): Big cities like state capitals, headquarters of Union Territories can also be distributed and covered for demonstrative effect. In addition, important highways connected to each of these mega cities can be taken up for coverage.
