In March 2023, sports utility vehicles (SUVs) made up more than half of India's record four million passenger vehicle sales in the financial year 2022-23, signalling growing popularity of the relatively pricier vehicles in a budget-conscious market, according to data released by industry body SIAM last month. Automobile manufacturers have sharpened their focus on producing SUVs, as consumers continue to shell out more for the feature-packed cars despite inflation trending higher through the year.

    Mahindra & Mahindra — the maker of the XUV 400 EV — sold 34,698 passenger vehicles last month, as against 22,526 in April 2022, according to a company statement.

    Maruti Suzuki India — the country's largest carmaker — sells 1,37,320 passenger vehicles in the domestic market in April 2023 as against 1,21,995 in the corresponding month a year agom an increase of 12.6 per cent compared with the year-ago period.

    Exports by Maruti Suzuki — whose passenger car portfolio includes Alto, Baleno, Swift, WagonR, Brezza and S-Cross — contract 7.8 per cent to 16,971 vehicles, according to a company statement. 

    The company's total sales — comprising domestic sales and exports — come in at 1,60,529 vehicles as against 1,50,661 in the year-ago period.
