The Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) said Data is the first Indian to become a member of ICANN panel country code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO). "Ajay Data becomes the first Indian to be appointed as a member of country code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO)," Data XGen Plus said in a statement.

An ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) official , who did not wish to be named, confirmed the appointment of Data and said that he will join the panel in October.

"It is a very important milestone for India as it has 22 different languages which are required to be brought on to Internet for mass adoption of broadband services. This is first time India has got representation at ccNSO. We expect Data to push for support of Indian scripts in internet space," ISPAI President Rajesh Chharia said.

Around 170 countries are represented in ccNSO by a panel of 18 members. Of these 18 members, 15 members are elected and three are appointed on the basis of nominations.

Data has been appointed on the panel by nomination committee of ccNSO--one of the three policy making bodies at ICANN.

His firm is first to start complete email addresses in Hindi, Punjabi, Marathi, Bengali and other scripts.
