A fundraiser in this regard was held over the weekend in a Maryland suburb of Washington, which was attended by the Indian Ambassador to the US, Navtej Sarna and others.

The American India Foundation (AIF) Clinton Fellowship is a volunteer service programme matching young professionals from the US and India with development organisations and social enterprises across India.

The AIF runs a programme called the William J Clinton Fellowship for Service programme where young professionals get to volunteer and work hands-on for 10 months in India on development projects in the fields of education, livelihood, technology, and public health, the AIF said in a statement.

The AIF Clinton Fellowship is helping create a new generation of leaders that will help bring about social and economic change.

Fellows support organisations at a crucial moment of scalability through collaboration, capacity building and skill sharing.

The AIF Clinton Fellowship is creating lasting ties between the US and India by strengthening the development sector and equipping the next generation of leaders to advance positive social change.

Fellows and the organisations they serve are committed to empowering the lives of marginalised communities in India.

Following, the tragic devastation caused by the Gujarat earthquake in 2001, then US president Bill Clinton and prime minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee recognised the need for a philanthropy platform that would connect the world's two largest democracies.

The AIF has since built on this vision and created countless opportunities for India's poor to live successful, productive lives while creating impactful change at an unprecedented scale, changing the lives of more than 3.1 million of India's less fortunate, according to information provided on the AIF website.
