HDFC General Insurance Ltd was earlier known as L&T General Insurance Co Ltd.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) had earlier approved the merger of HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company Limited with HDFC General Insurance Limited.

As part of the multi-step merger process, HDFC ERGO General Insurance acquired the entire shareholding of L&T General Insurance followed by name change of L&T General Insurance Company to HDFC General Insurance Ltd.

Afterwards, getting approval from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), HDFC ERGO General Insurance merged with HDFC General Insurance Co Ltd.

In the last step, name of HDFC General Insurance changed to HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company Ltd.

Irdai said all these steps have been completed by the insurers and the registration of erstwhile HDFC ERGO General Insurance stands cancelled with effect from August 16, 2017 as it has merged with HDFC General Insurance Limited.

"The merged entity is now known as HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company Limited. The policyholders of both the companies will be serviced by HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company Ltd," Irdai said.
