The government today said it has decided to extend the 'public utility services' status for aluminium manufacturing and bauxite mining by another six months.

The status will ensure smooth sale of the commodity even during any uncalled or sudden strikes or lock outs.

"The government has decided to extend the status of alumina and aluminium and mining of bauxite, as public utility services for another six months so that its sales is not affected due any uncalled or sudden strikes or lock outs," an official said.

Section 22 of the Industrial Disputes Act 1947 prohibits strikes and lock outs in public utility services unless they give sufficient notice as provided in the legislation.

"The services in industry 'Manufacturing of Alumina and Aluminium' and 'Mining of Bauxite' which is covered by item 30 and 31 of the First Schedule to the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 (14 of 1947) have been declared to be a Public Utility Service for a further period of six months with effect from November 16, 2017," a Labour Ministry statement said.

Earlier, these services were declared as 'Public Utility Service' for a period of six months with effect from May 16, 2017.
