As part of the operations conducted by the agency, a total seizure of Rs 1.21 crore of goods including gold biscuits, silver, jewellery made out of smuggled gold and cash which was the sale proceeds of smuggled gold, has been made, a press release issued today by the DRI said.

"Three persons namely Md Jahirul Islam Kayum (Bangladeshi national), Rajkumar Gupta and Jugal Kumar Singh have been arrested in this case," it said.

In the initial part of the operation, 20 pieces of gold biscuits weighing 2.519 kg worth Rs 70.45 lakh were seized from the intercepted Bangladeshi national, the release said.

Thereafter, in an immediate follow up action conducted by the DRI at the premises of the recipient Gupta, a jeweller based in Bara Bazaar area here, gold ornaments, silver granules and anklets valued at Rs 10.72 lakh and Indian currency of Rs 39.83 lakh were also recovered and seized yesterday, it said.

The jeweller had come to take the delivery of the smuggled gold at a hotel where the Bangladeshi man was staying, the agency claimed.

"Both the smuggler and the jeweller admitted that in the past too, they had smuggled and received gold respectively in this fashion from Bangladesh into India on several occasions," it said.

"Investigation further reveals that the currency recovered from the premises of the jeweller was the sale proceeds against the delivery of the smuggled gold," the release said.

All the three persons were produced before a court that remanded them to judicial custody till October 1.

"The Bangladesh High-commission has also been informed about the arrest of the Bangladeshi national," it said.
