Indian General Election 2024: Voters' rights everyone should know

ZeeBiz Webdesk

With the impending 2024 general elections, voters in the world's largest democracy will cast their votes in a few months. Here are some constitutional rights every Indian voter should be familiar with—rights granted and protected by our constitution.

Right to know

Each voter is entitled to be informed about the candidates vying for the election. This entails the ability for voters to request details concerning the candidates' financial histories, electoral platforms, and any criminal records they may have.

NOTA (Right Not to Vote)

NOTA or the "right to not vote" arises when none of the competing candidates meet the standards deemed worthy by the voter.

Tendered Votes

If a voter discovers that someone has cast a vote on their behalf, whether by mistake or fraud, they can present valid identification to receive a new ballot paper. Their vote will be recorded separately, ensuring affected individuals can still vote while upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

Voting Rights of Differently Abled and Illiterate Voters

If voters with disabilities or literacy challenges cannot vote at the polling station or via postal ballot, they may seek assistance from an electoral officer who will record their voting choices using their voice.
