Cyber security for SMEs: The key link

Small and medium enterprises play an undeniably paramount role in the economy, acting from a reliable supplier serving a wide array of industries to an essential contributor to GDP to a major creator of industrial jobs. It is the health and growth of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that nurtures a nation’s power to dream.

Did you know that MSMEs account for about 30 per cent of India’s GDP? And, not just that, they are responsible for half of the country’s exports, according to official estimates. One-third of India’s manufacturing production comes from MSMEs.

There are more than six crore MSMEs in India, equally spread between rural and urban parts of the country, employing both unskilled and semi-skilled workers.

The government has set an ambitious goal of taking the contribution of MSMEs to the GDP to as high as 50 per cent by 2025 as India becomes a $5-trillion economy. It also aims to expand the MSME workforce to 16 crore jobs during this period — translating to 45.5 per cent growth since 2020.

Cyber security: The missing piece connecting the global economy with the power of SMEs

The age of information has where on one hand created digital technology-backed enterprise solutions, on the other, it has subjected every part of the global economy to the ever-growing force of cyber threats. Rising demand for dependable digital solutions in the depths of the pandemic has made it necessary to put in place security systems against the evolving multitudes of cyber threats, such as ransomware, malware, spyware, adware, phishing, spoofing, denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, code injection, Internet of Things-based attacks, data leaks and cyber fraud.

The global economy today stares at such cyber challenges that are capable of rendering businesses — big and small — vulnerable to unwarranted risk and even prone to failure. Can technology — perhaps the biggest enabler of all time for all of humanity — defend itself against cyber threats of all kinds?

Cyber security — which is both effective and dependable — can prove to be a game-changer for small- and medium-sized businesses, especially when it comes to serving the ultimate socio-economic responsibility that they carry. Digital solutions are a boon to growing businesses, and the industries and the masses that depend on them, only if equipped with equally capable means to counter cyber threats.
