Trump says unfrozen Iran funds will buy US farm products; Tehran asserts control over Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has said that money being unfrozen under the latest understanding between Washington and Tehran will be used to purchase agricultural products from American farmers, while Iran said it would continue to administer the Strait of Hormuz under its own arrangements while observing international regulations.

Speaking about the latest developments in US-Iran talks, Trump said the funds released to Iran would be used to buy food products from the United States, including corn, soybeans and other agricultural commodities.

"Money that's being unfrozen is going to be used to buy food exclusively through the United States from our farmers," Trump said.

He said American farmers had welcomed the development. "Our farmers are very happy. I've had a lot of calls. They were very happy about that," Trump said.

Switzerland talks and 60-day roadmap

The remarks came after the conclusion of the initial round of technical talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland as part of a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at reducing tensions in West Asia.

According to the understanding, both sides agreed to establish a high-level committee and prepare a roadmap for a final agreement within 60 days.

Iran asserts control over Strait of Hormuz

Meanwhile, Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the Strait of Hormuz would not return to its pre-war operational arrangements and that Iran would continue to manage the strategic waterway.

Speaking to Iranian state media Press TV after returning from Switzerland, Ghalibaf said Iran would administer the strait while complying with international rules.

"Everyone should know that the administration of the Strait of Hormuz will never go back to the way it was before the war," he said. "Of course, international regulations will be observed, but Iran will administer the Strait of Hormuz," he added.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most important shipping routes, carrying a significant share of global crude oil and energy supplies.

Ghalibaf claims diplomatic leverage

Ghalibaf said Iran had demonstrated its influence during the negotiations in Switzerland and claimed Tehran had affected the outcome of discussions with the United States.

He alleged that Iran had compelled the United States to revise a social media post by Trump concerning Iran's support for regional groups, describing it as an example of Tehran's diplomatic leverage.

The Iranian Parliament Speaker also reiterated Tehran's distrust of Washington. "We have never trusted the Americans; we don't trust them now, and it is only reasonable to remain distrustful in the future," he said.

He said the negotiations in Switzerland helped prevent further escalation in the region and reduced the possibility of additional conflict.

Iran cites sanctions relief and regional issues

According to Ghalibaf, discussions also covered issues relating to Lebanon, regional ceasefire arrangements and territorial matters. "Had we not gone to Switzerland for talks with the US, more blood would have been shed among Muslims and Shias in Lebanon at any moment," he said.

Ghalibaf further said Iran remained committed to decisions taken under the leadership of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei. "We must remain united under the leadership of Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei and recognise that his word and directives are final," he said.

He also said that the release of frozen Iranian assets and the easing of oil-related sanctions were among the outcomes of the recent talks between Tehran and Washington.
