White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told news agency ANI on Tuesday that the Iranian regime has until 8 pm ET (5:30 am in India the next day) "to meet the moment and make a deal" with the US.
"Only the President knows where things stand and what he will do," said Leavitt.
The statement followed with a few hours left until the end of Trump's deadline when he has threatened to target Iran's infrastructure unless Tehran reaches a deal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier on Tuesday, the US president said that a "whole civilisation will die tonight" if Iran does not strike a deal on the US terms.
Bahrain's draft resolution on opening the Strait of Hormuz at the UN Security Council was not approved, with China and Russia vetoing the anti-Iran resolution.
