"We've had a number of substance agreements with the Iranians- that is the good news. "We go back to the United States having not come to an agreement," he said, noting that Washington had clearly laid out its red lines and areas of flexibility, but Iran had not accepted the terms.
He further said the US had sought a clear commitment from Tehran not to pursue nuclear weapons or the means to develop them, but "We just could not get to a situation where the Iranians were willing to accept our terms." While describing the US position as "flexible and accommodating," he said the negotiations failed to make headway.
"We leave here with a very simple proposal- a method of understanding that is our final and best offer. We'll see if the Iranians accept it," he added.
Iranian state media Press TV reported that the talks concluded after what it described as excessive US demands, which prevented a framework agreement. Key sticking points reportedly included nuclear rights and issues related to the Strait of Hormuz.
According to a statement issued at the conclusion of the Islamabad talks, Pakistan expressed gratitude to both sides for responding to the call of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, for an immediate ceasefire in the region and for agreeing to participate in the dialogue process in Islamabad.
The statement noted that delegations from both the United States and Iran, led by JD Vance and Iranian parliamentary speaker Bagher Ghalibaf, respectively, held extended negotiations facilitated by Pakistan, with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir playing a mediating role alongside other senior Pakistani officials. The discussions, which continued for nearly 24 hours, were aimed at narrowing differences but ended without a breakthrough.
