The Crossroads of the World turned into a 'langar sewa' hub as Padma Bhushan awardee and prominent Indian-American businessman Sant Singh Chatwal, alongside Onkar Singh, Coordinator of the ‘Let’s Share a Meal’ initiative, organised a one-of-a-kind 'langar' (community meal) drive in the heart of New York.
Times Square – known popularly as the Crossroads of the World – resonated with the spirit of Sikh community service on November 15, as Padma Bhushan awardee and prominent Indian-American businessman Sant Singh Chatwal, alongside Onkar Singh, Coordinator of the ‘Let’s Share a Meal’ initiative, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers, organised a massive ‘langar’ (community meal) drive. Thousands of free meals were served, drawing together not only the local Sikh diaspora but also families, interfaith groups, and tourists from across the globe.

Organisers said the event was more than just a food drive. It was, they said, a tribute to the timeless teachings of Guru Nanak Dev, founder of Sikhism, whose message of oneness, equality and compassion continues to inspire millions worldwide. “The vision behind this initiative is to encourage people of all cultures to come together, serve one another, and embrace the values of sharing and love,” said Onkar Singh.
Volunteers handed out freshly-prepared meals to passersby and participants, inviting all to experience the ‘langar’ tradition irrespective of their backgrounds or faiths.
Sant Singh Chatwal, known for his philanthropic work in the US and India, said: “Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s message remains as relevant today as ever. We hope this celebration at Times Square inspires others to take up causes of unity and service back in their own communities.”
The event transformed one of the world’s busiest public spaces into a vibrant platform of generosity and inclusivity. Organisers underscored that Times Square’s ‘langar’ will serve as a symbol of cross-cultural harmony, compassion and volunteerism on a global stage.
