Iran said on Thursday that it had targeted a US airbase in response to fresh American military attacks in the south of the country, according to foreign media reports. The latest escalation has raised fresh uncertainty over efforts to end the conflict and reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The statement came after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), through the Iran in India account on X, claimed that the US carried out a predawn aerial strike near Bandar Abbas Airport. Iran said the American airbase from where the operation originated was later targeted at around 4:50 am local time.

<h2>Trump says Iran wants a deal</h2>
The escalation came just hours after US President Donald Trump signalled that an agreement with Iran was not imminent.
Speaking during a Cabinet meeting, Trump said Iran believed it could “outwait” his administration. “They thought they were going to outwait me — ‘We’ll outwait him, he’s got the midterms,’ — I don’t care about the midterms,” foreign media quoted Trump as saying.
Trump added that Iran was keen to reach an agreement but negotiations had not yet produced acceptable terms for Washington.
“They want very much to make a deal,” Trump said, according to foreign media reports. “So far, they haven’t gotten there. We’re not satisfied with it, but we will be — either that or we’ll have to just finish the job.”
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. Any disruption in the region is closely tracked by global energy markets.
<h2>US says it struck drone control station</h2>
According to a US official cited by foreign media, the latest confrontation began on Wednesday when American forces shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones. The US also struck a ground control station inside Iran, claiming it posed a direct threat to American forces and commercial shipping activity.
The strikes reportedly took place near Bandar Abbas, the key Iranian port city located close to the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian media outlets reported that several American ships had attempted to pass through the strait without authorisation.
This was the second time in three days that the US carried out what it described as “defensive strikes” against Iran.
<h2>US imposes fresh sanctions</h2>
Late on Wednesday, the Trump administration also announced sanctions against the newly formed Persian Gulf Strait Authority, according to foreign media reports.
The agency, unveiled by Iran earlier this month, aims to regulate the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz and impose transit tolls that could reportedly go as high as $2 million per vessel.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticised the move, saying it reflected growing financial pressure on Tehran.
“The Iranian military’s latest attempt to extort global maritime trade is proof that Economic Fury has left the regime desperate for cash,” Bessent said in a statement, according to foreign media reports.

The IRGC on Thursday reiterated its warning that any further US military action would draw a stronger response. It said Washington would bear responsibility for any consequences arising from future escalation.
