Middle East Tensions: The United States and Israel's strikes on Iran have created increased tensions in the Middle East, which now threaten to interrupt worldwide trade and shipping operations.
The Indian government has organised a meeting to assess how the ongoing trade developments will impact the country. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry will hold the meeting at 2:30 pm, chaired by Rajesh Agrawal, Commerce Secretary. Exporters, shipping lines and freight forwarders will take part in the discussion.
Freight rates will increase by 20 to 30 per cent as shipping companies charge more due to higher marine insurance costs for vessels facing greater risks. The Red Sea route has become more dangerous, prompting Mediterranean Shipping Company to stop all its Middle East operations.
Exporters fear that their perishable shipments, which include fruits and meat, will face delays or complete cancellations. The government will investigate the logistics interruptions to determine which relief measures and alternative routes should be used. The petroleum and food ministries, together with other ministries, will schedule meetings to evaluate how the total situation will affect India.
Exporters are worried about losses. Shipments of perishable goods like fruits and meat may be delayed or cancelled, which could cause financial damage.
The meeting will focus on:
Exporters request the government to execute three different actions, which include:
Iran-Israel relations have experienced significant deterioration in recent years, which has brought the Middle East region closer to a potential military conflict. The United States and Israel assert that Iran's development of long-range ballistic missiles and nuclear capabilities presents a security threat to their region, while Iran maintains that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons.
The two nations maintained friendly relations until their diplomatic ties deteriorated into permanent hostility. Iran established formal diplomatic ties with Israel in 1950 and maintained cooperation with both Israel and the United States until the Iranian Revolution. After the revolution, Iran cut ties with the US and opposed Israel’s legitimacy.
The October 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel increased existing tensions, which reached their peak in 2025 when Iran and Israel entered their first direct military conflict.
