How heavy rainfall impacts kharif crop

Bhawna Gupta

What are kharif crops?

Planting of kharif crops, such as paddy, cotton, soybean and oil seeds, starts between June and September in India.

Which crops are kharif crops?

Unlike the rabi crops such as mustard, barley and wheat which are sown around October in India, kharif crops need a good amount of rainfall.

Can kharif crops tolerate abundant water?

No. Though sufficient rainfall is essential for the proper nourishment of kharif crops, excessive rain can damage them.

Which crops are most prone to excessive rain?

Cotton and paddy are specifically prone to damage in case of incessant rainfall.

Winds also play a role in proper growth of crops

For instance, rainfall along with too much wind leads to the flattening of paddy, making the crop difficult to harvest.
