Gita Gopinath has been named as the Chief Economist of the IMF, becoming the second Indian to hold this position. Notably, former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has served as Chief Economist of the IMF too. Gopinath completed her schooling in Calcutta and graduated from the Lady Shri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi. Gopi did her Masters from the Delhi School of Economics as well as from the University of Washington.
