Income Tax Slabs Budget 2025 Highlights: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman says that there will be no income tax for taxpayers up to the income of Rs 12 lakh in the new tax regime. She also revised tax slabs for tne new tax regime. There was no change for old regime taxpayers.

Budget 2025 Income Tax Slabs 2025-26 Highlights: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman says that there will be no income tax for taxpayers up to the income of Rs 12 lakh in the new tax regime. After the cabinet approved Budget 2025, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has started her Budget 2025 (for FY2025-26) (Saturday, February, 1, 2025) speech. It is her record 8th consecutive budget, which also includes an interim budget last year. During her budget speech, a majority of salaried class taxpayers will be keenly watching if she makes favourable changes in tax slabs in old and new tax regimes. In her previous budget presentation (Budget 2024) in July, Sitharaman had increased the numbers of tax slabs to 6 in the new tax regime.

Revised Income Tax Slabs Budget 2025

Here are the revised rates after this development.
Nil tax in the new regime on income up to Rs 0-4 lakh
5% tax in the new regime on income up to Rs 4-8 lakh
10% tax in the new regime on income up to Rs 8-12 lakh
15% tax in the new regime on income up to Rs 12-16 lakh
20% tax in the new regime on income up to Rs 16-20 lakh
25% tax in the new regime on income up to Rs 20-24 lakh
30% tax in the new regime on income above Rs 24 lakh

What did Nirmala Sitharaman say?

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman says that a taxpayer in the new regime with an income of Rs 12 lakh will get a benefit of Rs 80,000 in tax. A person having income of Rs 18 lakh will get a benefit of Rs 70,000 in tax. "A person with an income of Rs 25 lakh gets a benefit of Rs 1.10 lakh. For salaried employees, this nil tax limit will be Rs 12.75 lakh per annum, after taking into account a standard deduction of Rs 75,000."

Income Tax Budget 2025 Live: When marginal tax was cut from 97.75% to 75%   

There was a time when the maximum marginal tax in India was 97.75%. YB Chavan changed that in the 1974-75 budget. Taxpayers earning income up to Rs 6,000 a year were kept outside the ambit of income tax in that budget.
However, a 70 per cent marginal rate of basic income tax was introduced on the slab over Rs 70,000/year.

Income Tax Budget 2025 Live: When did 1st income tax slab change happen in India?   

The first tax slab change was made by Finance Minister John Mathai in 1949-50. He reduced tax on incomes up to Rs 10,000 by a quarter of an anna in two slabs.

Nandita Tripathi, partner, Deloitte India, expects Centre to create a separate section for home loan repayment with a combined maximum deduction of up to Rs 5 lakh for both principal and interest components.

"Currently, the repayment of the principal component of home loans is eligible for tax deduction under Section 80C. In contrast, the repayment of interest component of up to Rs 2 lakh qualifies for tax deduction under Section 24(b)," she says.

Income Tax Budget 2025 Live: SBI Research expects govt to reduce tax rate to 15% from 20% for taxpayers in Rs 10 lakh-Rs 15 lakh 

In its report, SBI Research expects the rationalisation of tax slabs from the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. "For individuals earning between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh annually, the tax rate should be reduced from 20 per cent to 15 per cent.

Ashish Agrawal, Partner, Dhruva Advisors, says that revisions to tax slabs and deductions under Section 80C have not been updated for many years and are due for revision in line with inflation rates. 

"The tax-free income threshold should be increased to Rs 10 lakh, with a 10 per cent rate for income up to Rs 20 lakh, a 20 per cent rate for income up to Rs 30 lakh, and a 30 per cent rate for incomes above Rs 30 lakh."
