With flight disruptions continuing across the country after large-scale cancellations by IndiGo, the Indian Railways has moved swiftly to ease passenger pressure by adding 116 extra coaches across 37 trains. The move, taken on Thursday evening, aims to support last-minute travellers who are turning to trains as weather-related delays and the Airbus A320 software update advisory impact airline operations.
Railway officials said the decision was taken after monitoring the surge in bookings and waitlists on several high-density routes, particularly in the north, south and east zones. The extra coaches have been attached to trains running between Delhi, Jammu, Guwahati, Chennai, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Lucknow, Kolkata and other key cities.
According to internal Railways data, shared as of 19:00 hrs on 5 December 2025, augmentations have been carried out across major zones — including Northern Railway (NR), Western Railway (WR), North-East Frontier Railway (NFR), East Central Railway (ECR), East Coast Railway (ECOR), Eastern Railway (ER) and Southern Railway (SR). Most additions involve 3AC, 2AC, Sleeper Class and Chair Car (CC) coaches.
To accommodate the rush on northbound routes, NR has added coaches to long-distance and Shatabdi-type services:
12425/12426 New Delhi–Jammu Tawi
Extra trips: 6 (NDLS–JAT), 8 (JAT–NDLS) — 3AC
12423/12424 New Delhi–Dibrugarh
Extra trips: 6 (NDLS–DBRG), 8 (DBRG–NDLS) — 3AC
12045/12046 New Delhi–Chandigarh Shatabdi
Extra coach: 1 Chair Car
12029/12030 New Delhi–Amritsar Shatabdi
Extra trips: 3 each way — Chair Car
Western Railway has added extra 2AC coaches to support passengers shifting to trains from major western metro airports.
The rush on eastern routes has prompted major additions on the Assam sector:

8 augmented trips each way — Sleeper + 3AC
Southern Railway has undertaken the largest number of augmentations in this round, particularly with the heavy travel load across Tamil Nadu and Kerala:
