With flight disruptions continuing across the country after large-scale cancellations by IndiGo, the Indian Railways has moved swiftly to ease passenger pressure by adding 116 extra coaches across 37 trains. The move, taken on Thursday evening, aims to support last-minute travellers who are turning to trains as weather-related delays and the Airbus A320 software update advisory impact airline operations.

Railway officials said the decision was taken after monitoring the surge in bookings and waitlists on several high-density routes, particularly in the north, south and east zones. The extra coaches have been attached to trains running between Delhi, Jammu, Guwahati, Chennai, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Lucknow, Kolkata and other key cities.

According to internal Railways data, shared as of 19:00 hrs on 5 December 2025, augmentations have been carried out across major zones — including Northern Railway (NR), Western Railway (WR), North-East Frontier Railway (NFR), East Central Railway (ECR), East Coast Railway (ECOR), Eastern Railway (ER) and Southern Railway (SR). Most additions involve 3AC, 2AC, Sleeper Class and Chair Car (CC) coaches.

  • 12429/12430 New Delhi–Lucknow: 1 extra coach — 3AC

East Central & East Coast Railway: Patna and Bhubaneswar routes get support

  • 13185 Sealdah–Jaynagar: 2 trips — Sleeper
  • 13105 Sealdah–Ballia: 2 trips — Sleeper

Southern Railway: Maximum additions as weather affects flight operations

Southern Railway has undertaken the largest number of augmentations in this round, particularly with the heavy travel load across Tamil Nadu and Kerala:

  • 12075/12076 Thiruvananthapuram–Calicut Jan Shatabdi: 5 CC coaches added
  • 12243/12244 Chennai–Coimbatore: 1 CC coach
  • 12695/12696 Chennai–Thiruvananthapuram: 5 Sleeper coaches
  • Multiple MS (Chennai Egmore) sector trains — including services to Thanjavur, Kollam, Allappuzha, Erode and Salem — additional Sleeper coaches across several days

Southern Railway alone has attached over 40 coaches across multiple trains in this phase.

Why the sudden expansion?

Senior railway officials said waitlists shot up sharply in the past 48 hours due to:

  • Severe weather in South India
  • Surge in bookings after IndiGo’s flight cancellations
  • Precautionary grounding of several A320 aircraft for the Airbus software update
  • Early-December festival and business travel demand

The Railways has kept a close watch on sectors such as Delhi–Chennai, Delhi–Guwahati, Chennai–Kerala, Bengaluru–Tamil Nadu and eastern Uttar Pradesh routes. Officials said further coach additions cannot be ruled out depending on demand trends.

What travellers should do?

Passengers planning immediate travel have been advised to:

  • Check updated coach positions on NTES or IRCTC
  • Monitor waitlist changes as last-minute clearances are expected
  • Avoid station rush by checking revised timings before departure

The Railways said it will continue to assess demand in real time and add resources where possible.
