H1 2026 box office records strong growth

MAI said the Indian theatrical exhibition sector witnessed robust growth during the first six months of 2026 as audiences continued returning to cinemas.

According to the association, the 21 per cent YoY increase in multiplex box office collections reflects the continued strength of theatrical releases across languages and genres. The growth was supported by a healthy mix of blockbuster franchises, original films, regional cinema and international releases.

Commenting on the performance, Kamal Gianchandani, President of MAI, said the first half of 2026 demonstrated the resilience and enduring appeal of the theatrical business. He added that the 21 per cent year-on-year growth indicates consumers continue to value the immersive, communal cinema experience, supported by a diverse slate of quality films.
