<p>Earlier, Dorsey had announced the layoffs in a note to employees, describing the reduction as “one of the hardest decisions in the history of the company.” Block is reducing its workforce from over 10,000 to just under 6,000, meaning over 4,000 employees are being asked to leave or enter consultation.</p>
<p>He emphasised that the decision was not due to financial trouble: “Our business is strong. Gross profit continues to grow, we continue to serve more and more customers, and profitability is improving. But something has changed. We’re already seeing that the intelligence tools we’re creating and using, paired with smaller and flatter teams, are enabling a new way of working which fundamentally changes what it means to build and run a company. And that’s accelerating rapidly.”</p>
<h2><strong>Why did Dorsey choose immediate action?</strong></h2>
<p>Dorsey explained that he had two options: cut gradually over months or years as the shift played out, or act immediately. He chose the latter to avoid repeated rounds of layoffs, which he said are destructive to morale, focus, and trust. “I’d rather take a hard, clear action now and build from a position we believe in than manage a slow reduction of people toward the same outcome,” he wrote.</p>
<p>Employees affected by the layoffs will receive 20 weeks of salary plus one week per year of tenure, equity vested through the end of May, six months of health care, corporate devices, and $5,000 to help with their transition (with similar support provided outside the US according to local requirements).</p>
<p>Dorsey stressed that communication channels would remain open through Thursday evening (Pacific) so employees could say goodbye properly. He also said that he will host a live video session to thank everyone at 3:35 pm pacific. “I know doing it this way might feel awkward. I’d rather it feel awkward and human than efficient and cold,” he wrote.</p>
