The 2026 Assembly elections, as per Election Commission of India (ECI) data, produced a sharply divided political verdict across Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry, marked by sweeping mandates in some states and fractured outcomes in others. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a landslide in West Bengal with 206 seats and retained Assam for a third consecutive term under the NDA, the Indian National Congress (INC)-led United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power in Kerala with 102 seats, ending a decade of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule.
Tamil Nadu delivered a hung Assembly with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) of Vijay emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats, while NDA managed to secure mandate in Puducherry also led by the AINRC.
Beyond the overall mandate, the elections also stood out for an unusually high number of landslide victories, where candidates defeated rivals by over 1 lakh votes, underlining strong local-level dominance and voter consolidation in several constituencies.
In one of the most high-profile wins, Sunetra Ajit Pawar, wife of late Ajit Pawar, emerged as a key political force. She is serving as the 11th Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra since 2026, sharing the office with Eknath Shinde, and is the first woman to hold the post. She also serves as the National President of the Nationalist Congress Party and has previously represented Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha.
In the Baramati bypoll, she registered a commanding win with 2,18,969 votes, defeating her nearest rival by an extraordinary 2,18,034 votes, marking one of the biggest margins of the election cycle.
In Assam, several Congress candidates delivered strong individual performances. Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar, a seasoned politician, was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Golakganj in 2021 as an Indian National Congress (INC) candidate. In the 2026 elections, he secured a massive mandate from Gauripur with a victory margin of 1,19,097 votes, reinforcing his strong grassroots base in the region.
Aftab Uddin Mollah, also known as Aftabuddin, is a veteran INC leader from Assam who previously served as an MLA from the Jaleswar constituency between 2001 and 2006. Returning to electoral prominence, he won Jaleswar in 2026 with a margin of 1,09,688 votes, reflecting renewed voter support in his constituency.
Adding to Congress’ strong showing in select Assam seats, Tanzil Hussain, a prominent young leader and former NSUI National Secretary, won from Samaguri with a massive margin of 1,08,310 votes, defeating BJP’s Anil Saikia in a decisive contest that highlighted the party’s continued appeal among youth leadership faces.
Zubair Anam Mazumder, another INC candidate, contested from the Algapur-Katlicherra constituency in Hailakandi district. A graduate by qualification and engaged in business, he registered a strong win with a margin of 1,05,448 votes, further strengthening Congress’ presence in the region.
In West Bengal, Anandamay Barman, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, retained the Matigara-Naxalbari seat. First elected in 2021, he was re-elected in the 2026 Assembly elections, securing a victory margin of 1,04,265 votes, reflecting continued BJP consolidation in select pockets of North Bengal.
From Maharashtra, Akshay Shivajirao Kardile, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, also secured a decisive win from Rahuri. He emerged victorious with a margin of 1,12,587 votes, adding to the list of one-sided electoral outcomes in the state.
