Akshay Kumar’s much-anticipated courtroom period drama Kesari Chapter 2 opened to Rs 7.84 crore nett at the domestic box office on Friday, the makers announced on Saturday. While not his biggest opening, the film has fared better than his recent releases Khel Khel Mein and Sarfira, which managed Rs 5.05 crore and Rs 2.5 crore respectively on their first day. However, it still trails behind Sky Force, Akshay’s January release that roared in with Rs 12.25 crore on Day 1 and Rs 62.25 crore over its debut weekend.
Released under the Dharma Productions banner and helmed by debutant director Karan Singh Tyagi, Kesari Chapter 2 was promoted as a powerful story of justice and truth. The production house shared a poster on social media revealing the opening day figures, captioned: “A film about justice. A journey of truth. A triumph at the box office.”

A courtroom battle rooted in history
The film, a spiritual successor to Akshay’s 2019 hit Kesari, shifts focus from the battlefield to the courtroom. It is based on The Case That Shook the Empire, a book penned by Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat, which documents a critical legal battle fought in the 1920s. Akshay portrays Sir C Sankaran Nair, a lawyer who took on the British Empire over the atrocities committed during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
R Madhavan plays Neville McKinley, a lawyer defending the British establishment, while Ananya Panday makes her period drama debut as Nair’s co-counsel, Dilreet Gill.
This film also marks the first-ever collaboration between Akshay Kumar and R Madhavan, adding further star value to the courtroom drama.
With the weekend underway, all eyes are now on whether strong word-of-mouth and audience sentiment will help boost the film’s performance at the box office.
