The Department of Telecommunications has directed that all new smartphones sold in India must come with the Sanchar Saathi app pre-installed. The government says the app is meant to prevent mobile theft, IMEI cloning and SIM-related fraud — and is not a surveillance tool. Existing devices will receive the feature through software updates. Despite privacy concerns, officials insist the app does not access personal data and functions only as a security utility.
