Industry body, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), in its letter to TRAI, has said that permitting the launch of PDOs just on the basis of registration is a threat for licensed telecom service providers as they are already facing tough financial conditions.&nbsp;COAI also claims that PDOs started by unlicensed companies can be a threat to data privacy and can compromise national security.

Other DoT targets include enabling 100 mbps broadband on demand to all key development institutions and deploying 5 million public Wi-Fi hotspots by 2020 and 10 million by 2022.&nbsp;These public Wi-Fi hotspots would ride on BharatNet, through which, the government plans to connect 250,000 gram panchayats with rural broadband.&nbsp;

The decision will pave the way for travellers to use internet and voice services on mobile phone during flights in the Indian airspace.&nbsp;"We plan to hold a meeting coming Monday (May 14) or Tuesday (May 15) with officials of Civil Aviation Ministry on this," Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan told reporters on the sidelines of CII Broadband Summit here.&nbsp;Telecom operators may or may not be part of the upcoming meeting which will look at evolving a framework for in-flight connectivity, she added.

The in-flight connectivity will be allowed in both domestic as well as international airlines entering the Indian space. It also says that the license for the in-flight connectivity will be provided at a meagre fee of Rs 1. In fact, the telecom commission has accepted all recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to make in-flight connectivity a reality.&nbsp;

The Department of Telecommunications has directed that all new smartphones sold in India must come with the Sanchar Saathi app pre-installed. The government says the app is meant to prevent mobile theft, IMEI cloning and SIM-related fraud — and is not a surveillance tool. Existing devices will receive the feature through software updates. Despite privacy concerns, officials insist the app does not access personal data and functions only as a security utility. The platform has already helped trace or recover more than 26 lakh phones nationwide.
