Coal imports jump 9% in 2018-19 on domestic shortage

The double-digit growth in thermal coal imports during 2018-19 was on expected lines and caused by coal shortage at power plants until recently, said Mjunction report.

"With the demand for power likely to remain healthy in the rest of FY19 and thermal capacity contributing to the required growth, coal availability becomes a key determinant. Considering the historical growth rate of domestic non-coking coal production and offtake, imported coal requirement will increase, as against FY18 when imported coal usage declined," Ind-Ra said in a statement issued here.

Indian thermal coal imports rose to 43.4 million tonnes during the three months ended June 30, up from 37.9 million a year ago, according to data from American Fuels & Natural Resources, a Dubai-based trader of coal from the United States which tracks shipments around the region.
