Google ditches dessert naming for Android, next version to be called Android 10

The search engine giant Google broke a 10-year-long history of naming Android releases after desserts (sweet dish eaten post-meal) on Thursday and announced that the latest version of the operating system will be called Android 10. This came as smartphone lovers continued to guess the deserts starting with 'Q' after which Google could name the next version of the highly-popular OS.

“First, we’re changing the way we name our releases. Our engineering team has always used internal code names for each version, based of tasty treats, or desserts, in alphabetical order,” said Sameer Samat, VP of Product Management, Android, in a statement.

The naming tradition has become a fun part of the release each year externally too, like Android Lollipop or Marshmallows. Google believes that naming the OS after deserts could confuse people and that is why it went with a more simple name this time. "As a global operating system, it’s important that these names are clear and relatable for everyone in the world. So, this next release of Android will simply use the version number and be called Android 10," Samat explained.

“While there were many tempting ‘Q’ desserts out there, we think that at version 10 and 2.5 billion active devices, it was time to make this change,” he added. The top Google executive also confirmed that this isn't the one-off case and the company is dropping the Google branding foreover. He said that this year it will release Android 10 and next year will be Android 11, and so on. Google also changed the logo from green to black. This decision was taken as the colour was hard to read, especially for people with visual impairments.

Google will officially start using the updated logo in the coming weeks with the final release of Android 10.

Earlier in the day, HMD Global had shared its roll out plan for Android 10 across the Nokia smartphone family. It said that Nokia smartphone users can get their hands on the Android 10 software upgrade starting in Q4 2019.

"With a proven track record in delivering software updates fast, Nokia smartphones were the first whole portfolio to benefit from a 2-letter upgrade from Android Nougat to Android Oreo and then Android Pie. We were the fastest manufacturer to upgrade from Android Oreo to Android Pie across the range. And with today’s roll out plan we look set to do it even faster for Android Pie to Android 10 upgrades," Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global said.

"We are the only manufacturer 100% committed to having the latest Android across the entire portfolio. Thank you to everyone in our Beta programmes who help to build on our unique Android promise and ensure your Nokia phone experience just keeps getting better," he added.
