Aman Gupta, co-founder of consumer electronics brand boAt and a core judge on Shark Tank India, has stirred fresh controversy with his candid take on the show's evolving panel. During a recent podcast with Prakhar Gupta, Aman alleged that some of the newer sharks may have joined the business reality show not out of genuine interest, but to polish their public image.
Without naming individuals, Aman hinted at a growing disconnect in intent between the original sharks and those who joined later seasons. “I like those whose companies are performing well. They’re original and aren’t on the show to fix their character. My character has been clean right from the start,” he remarked.
He went on to claim that some of the new judges had initially turned down the opportunity to be part of the show. However, after witnessing the popularity enjoyed by original sharks like himself and Anupam Mittal, they reportedly developed “FOMO” and actively pursued a spot on the panel. “They kept chasing the makers asking them to make them sharks. And now, they’re sharks," he added.
Reflecting on his own journey from Season 1 to Season 4, Aman noted, “Aman Gupta may have evolved from season 1 to 4, but his character has been the same. We don’t do any useless stuff. Love us or hate us, this is who we are.”
Aman also praised fellow original shark Namita Thapar, highlighting her consistency and honesty, before pointing out his reservations about some of the newer members. “That’s why I sometimes don’t like these new sharks, otherwise it’s okay,” he said.
Touching upon the trappings of fame, Aman cautioned against letting success cloud judgment. “A lot of people get a God complex once they start doing well... That’s where the downfall begins. Even Ravana couldn’t keep his pride,” he reflected, urging humility and self-awareness.
Shark Tank India, the Indian adaptation of the global business reality format, began airing in 2021 on Sony Entertainment Television and SonyLIV. The show originally featured Aman Gupta, Anupam Mittal, Namita Thapar, Vineeta Singh, and Peyush Bansal. Season 4 introduced new faces including Kunal Bahl, Viraj Bahl, and Chirag Nakrani — some of whom Aman’s remarks may have been directed at.
