8th Pay Commission News: Central government employees across India have been keenly waiting for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. Once it is implemented, they are likely to see a significant jump in their basic salaries in a few months. Amid such a scenario, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman last month gave an important update about the formation of the new pay commission.
She was replying to a question from Members of Parliament- Kangna Ranaut and Sajda Ahmed, who had inquired about the status of the 8th Pay Commission formation.
The finance minister said: "Inputs on Terms of Reference (ToR) have been sought from major stakeholders, including Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Personnel & Training and from States. Impact of 8th CPC can be assessed only once the recommendations are made by 8th CPC and are accepted by the Government."
Sitharaman added, "The approximate number of Central Government civilian employees and pensioners/family pensioners is 36.57 lakh (as on 01.03.2025) and 33.91 lakh (as on 31.12.2024) respectively. Defence Personnel and Pensioners will also be benefitted."
As developments about the 8th Pay Commission formation are unfolding one by one, let's see what can be projected revised salaries for central government employees with current basic pays of Rs 20,300, Rs 30,200, Rs 40,600, Rs 50,400, Rs 61,000, and Rs 70,000. We will calculate these projected revised basic pays at fitment factors of 1.92, 2.28, and 2.86.
The basic salaries and pensions for the 8th Pay Commission will be revised on the basis of the fitment factor, which was the barometer for salary revision in the 7th Pay Commission as well.
The fitment factor for the 7th Pay Commission was 2.57.
It will be decided when the 8th Pay Commission is formed, presents its recommendations to Centre, which will give its approval. There are several suggestions from government departments. Some of the fitment factors that may be considered are 1.92, 2.208, 2.28, 257, and 2.86.
The tenure for the 7th Pay Commission will be completed on December 31, 2025. The 8th Pay Commission can be implemented any time after that.
