Fake GST Summons News, GST Fraud: Cautioning the public against fraudsters, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) on Friday issued an advisory against fake and fraudulent summons issued by certain miscreants over GST-related violations. Advising the public to verify any apparent communication from the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) or Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) offices online, the indirect tax-governing body said that taxpayers may report the detection of any such activity immediately.
Here are a few important things to know about this development:
Bewae of Fake GST Summons | How are the fraudsters operating?
Some individuals are learned to be creating and sending fake summons to taxpayers, who may or may not be under investigation by the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, according to an official statement.
These fake summons resemble "very closely with the original" due to the use of the department’s logo and fake document identification numbers (DINs), making the document "look and feel genuine", the CBIC noted.

The CBIC has advised anyone receiving such communication to verify its authenticity online.
This is how to do it:
- Go to the following section of the CBIC portal, esanchar.cbic.gov.in/DIN/DINSearch.
- Go to the "verify CBIC-DIN" window.
- Follow through to check the authenticity of the communication.
- If genuine, the online facility will confirm the same to the user.
"On verifying the DIN, if any individual or taxpayer finds that the Summon/letter/Notice is fake, it may immediately be reported to the office concerned," said the CBIC.
Doing so will enable the competent DGGI or CGST formation to take strict action against the fraudsters for using fake summons, letters or notices aimed at duping the public, according to the advisory.
