If you are planning to visit a bank branch today, it is important to check whether banks are open in your city. Most public and private sector banks across India are closed on Friday, April 3, on account of Good Friday, as per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar.

The holiday applies to a majority of cities, which means routine banking services at physical branches will not be available for customers in these locations.

Banks shut in most cities; few exceptions remain

Bank branches are closed in most major financial and administrative centres including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru.

The closure covers both public and private lenders such as State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Punjab National Bank, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank.

According to the RBI calendar, cities where banks are closed today include Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada.

However, banks are open in select locations such as Agartala, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Jaipur, Jammu and Srinagar, where Good Friday is not observed as a bank holiday.

Why are banks closed on Good Friday?

Good Friday is an important day in Christianity. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for humanity. The day falls during Holy Week, just before Easter Sunday.

It is observed as a day of mourning, prayer and reflection by Christians across the world. In India, it is recognised as a bank holiday in most states, which is why banking operations at branches are suspended in many regions.

RBI’s bank holiday framework explained

The Reserve Bank of India classifies bank holidays into three broad categories:

  • Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act
  • Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays
  • Banks’ closing of accounts

While some holidays are observed nationwide, many others depend on regional festivals and local observances. This is why bank closures may vary from city to city.

Apart from festival-related holidays, banks also remain closed on all Sundays and on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. They remain open on the first, third and fifth Saturdays.

Will ATMs, UPI and net banking work today?

Even though bank branches are closed, customers can still use digital banking services.

ATMs will stay open. You can withdraw and deposit cash as usual.

UPI apps and mobile banking will work normally. You can make payments and transfers.

Net banking will also be available for fund transfers and other services.

Bank holidays do not affect these services because they run on separate digital systems.

Planning a bank visit? Check tomorrow’s status

Banks will reopen on Saturday, April 4, as it is the first Saturday of the month. Since only the second and fourth Saturdays are designated holidays, customers can visit branches tomorrow for their banking needs.

What this means for customers

With most bank branches shut today, customers are advised to rely on digital channels for urgent transactions. Those requiring branch services should plan visits either on Saturday or on the next working day in their respective cities.

Checking the city-wise holiday list in advance can help avoid inconvenience, especially during festival periods when bank closures vary across regions.
