Is the bank closed on Good Friday 2026? Good Friday, also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Great and Holy Friday, is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum. This year, the day falls on April 3, and this has led to widespread confusion among bank customers as to whether banks across India will remain open or closed on Good Friday 2026.
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, banks are closed in 28 cities across in India, including Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada.
The closure is on account of Good Friday (Friday of the Passion of the Lord), a solemn Christian holy day commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary. Other than these, bank branches are operational across the rest of the country on April 3, 2026.
Additionally, banks will be closed for six more days in April, including Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays. Therefore, customers planning to visit a bank branch are advised to check the list of bank holidays issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) before planning any transactions.
While physical branches will remain closed during these days, customers can continue to use ATMs, internet banking, mobile apps, and UPI services without interruption, except in rare cases of scheduled maintenance.
