As 2025 draws to a close and the new year approaches, bank customers across India are seeking clarity on branch operations on January 1, 2026.

Knowing bank holidays in advance helps customers plan important financial work. It also helps avoid last-minute delays for services that require a branch visit.

Banks to remain closed on New Year January 1, 2026

Banks will remain shut on January 1, 2026, in several states due to New Year’s Day and Gaan-Ngai. The states include Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, West Bengal and Meghalaya.

Customers in these states will not have access to in-person banking services on that day. Services such as cash deposits, cheque clearances and issuance of demand drafts will not be available.

Digital banking services to continue

Despite the branch closure, customers can continue to use digital banking services. Online banking, mobile apps, UPI and ATMs will remain operational. Fund transfers, bill payments and routine transactions can be carried out without disruption.

Banks advise customers to plan branch-related work in advance. Using digital platforms can ensure uninterrupted access to essential services during the holiday.

Bank holidays vary by state

Bank holidays differ from state to state, as notified by the Reserve Bank of India. Banks are also closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.

Apart from New Year’s Day on January 1, banks will remain closed in different states during January for various occasions. These include Gaan-Ngai, Mannam Jayanthi, the birthday of Hazrat Ali, the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu, Uttarayana Punyakala, Pongal, Maghe Sankranti, Makara Sankranti, Thiruvalluvar Day, Uzhavar Thirunal, the birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Saraswati Puja, Vir Surendrasai Jayanti, Basanta Panchami and Republic Day.

Customers are advised to check state-wise holiday lists and plan their banking needs accordingly.
