Banks across several parts of India remained closed on Tuesday, April 14, due to multiple holidays falling on the same day. The closures were observed for Ambedkar Jayanti and regional New Year festivals such as Tamil New Year, Baisakhi, Bohag Bihu, Vishu and Cheiraoba.
The holiday led to a broad shutdown of bank branches across major cities. However, online banking services continued to function normally.
Bank branches remained shut in cities such as Agartala, Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, Ranchi, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada.
Most metro cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Hyderabad, observed a full banking holiday. However, bank holidays in India are state-specific. Some regions may still see limited branch operations depending on local notifications.
The bank holiday is part of the official calendar issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The central bank releases the holiday list at the start of every year.
According to the 2026 calendar, April boasts sixteen bank holidays, spread across various regions. These observances encompass national holidays, regional festivals, and the usual weekend closures.
Under RBI rules, banks remain shut on gazetted public holidays. They are also closed on the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays. Apart from this, state-specific festivals lead to additional closures.
April 14 marks the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. It is observed as a public holiday in many states. The date also coincides with several regional New Year celebrations across India.
These holidays fall under the Negotiable Instruments Act. This makes it a mandatory bank holiday in many regions. Since multiple festivals fall on the same day this year, the impact is wider than usual.
Bank holidays will continue in some regions over the next few days.
April 15: Holidays for Pohela Boishakh, Vishu and Bohag Bihu in several states
April 16: Bohag Bihu holiday in select regions
April 19: Weekly Sunday holiday across India
Banks will remain open on April 17 and April 18. The third Saturday is usually a working day.
Despite branch closures, banking services are not fully affected. Customers can use digital channels for most transactions.
NEFT, RTGS and IMPS services are available. UPI payments also continue to work without any interruption. ATMs remain open for cash withdrawals.
However, services that need a branch visit, such as cheque clearance or account updates, are not available today.
Large lenders such as State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and Punjab National Bank have kept branches closed in most regions.
Their mobile apps and internet banking platforms continue to operate as usual.
Customers should check with their local branches for exact holiday status. Bank holidays differ across states.
For urgent work, digital banking is the best option. It is advisable to plan important transactions in advance during weeks with multiple holidays.
