HDFC Bank has issued a fresh alert to customers against rising impersonation and banking fraud cases, asking account holders to verify official calls carefully before sharing any information.
In an email sent to customers, the private sector lender said its representatives will now contact users only through phone numbers beginning with “1600” or “140”. The bank said customers should treat calls from these number series as genuine and authorised communication from HDFC Bank.
The bank added that these calls could relate to important banking services, account updates, or transaction-related communication. Customers were advised not to ignore such calls if they originate from the approved number series.
HDFC Bank said the move is aimed at improving transparency and reducing the risk of fraudsters posing as bank officials. According to the bank, the transition will help customers clearly identify official communication and lower impersonation-based scam risks.
The lender also said the initiative is expected to strengthen customer trust and improve security around financial communication.
HDFC Bank advised customers to save official 1600 and 140 series numbers in their contact lists to avoid confusion during important banking communication.
The bank also reminded users not to share sensitive banking details such as OTPs, PINs, passwords, CVV numbers, or complete debit and credit card information over phone calls.
“HDFC Bank will never ask for your OTP, PIN, password, CVV or full card details over the phone,” the bank said in its customer communication.
Banks across India have been increasing customer awareness campaigns amid a rise in cyber fraud, phishing attempts, fake customer care calls, and digital payment scams. Fraudsters often impersonate bank employees to obtain confidential account information from customers.
HDFC Bank said customer safety and financial well-being remain its highest priority.
