The central government on Wednesday approved the re-appointment of Ashwini Kumar Tewari as Managing Director of the State Bank of India, extending his tenure until December 2027.
"In exercise of powers conferred by clause (b) of section 19 read with sub-section (1) of section 20 of the State Bank of India Act, 1955 (23 of 1955), the Central Government hereby re-appoints Ashwini Kumar Tewari as Managing Director of the State Bank of India," SBI said in its regulatory filing.
Tewari’s current term, which was set to end on January 27, 2026, will now continue until the date of superannuation on December 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, the PSU bank noted in its filing. He is in charge of the corporate banking division and subsidiaries at SBI.
Earlier, Centre made the appointment of Ravi Ranjan as managing director effective from December 15, 2025, until September 30, 2028.
This marks the appointment of the fourth MD at SBI. The SBI hierarchy is currently made up of the chairman CS Setty and four managing directors—Ashwini Kumar Tewari; Rana Ashutosh Kumar Singh, whose responsibility includes overseeing international banking, global markets and technology; Rama Mohan Rao Amara, responsible for retail business and operations; and Ravi Ranjan, who will deal with risk, compliance and the stressed assets resolution group (SARG).
Tewari is a highly experienced banker with a long career of more than 30 years at State Bank of India (SBI), where he began his professional journey in 1991 as a Probationary Officer.
He has been the Managing Director (Corporate Banking and Subsidiaries) and Whole Time Director since November 21, 2023, supervising major corporate and commercial credit and managing the banking and non-banking businesses of SBI which include credit cards, mutual funds, insurance, capital markets, and custodial services.
He also headed International Banking, IT, and non-bank subsidiaries and was the MD & CEO of SBI Cards, where he played a significant role in the partnerships with GPay, PayTM, and BPCL, among others.
Tewari is one of the key officers in SBI’s US and East Asia operations and has held various domestic banking leadership roles.
