Tata Motors PV Share Price: Shares of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. plunged on Wednesday after its luxury vehicle arm, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), outlined a financial year 2027 outlook that fell short of market expectations, particularly on profitability.
The stock ended the session at Rs 361.70, down Rs 31.90 or 8.10 per cent, after falling as much as 9 per cent during the day. The sharp decline came as investors reacted to takeaways from JLR's investor day and concerns over the pace of margin recovery at the luxury automaker.
The selloff also came against the backdrop of a cautious view from brokerage firm BofA Securities, which had reiterated its "Underperform" rating on the stock ahead of the investor event.
At its investor day, JLR said it is factoring in revenue growth of 13 per cent for FY27 and expects earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins of 4 per cent, compared with just above 0 per cent in the previous financial year.
While the guidance points to an improvement in profitability, analysts had been expecting a stronger margin outlook. The lower-than-anticipated target raised concerns about the speed at which the company can restore earnings momentum amid an evolving global luxury vehicle market.
JLR also said operating cash flow is expected to break even in the current year, compared with a negative £2.3 billion in the previous financial year.
The luxury vehicle maker said it is targeting medium-term double-digit revenue growth, with an increased focus on North America.
Management highlighted that the Defender brand will play a central role in driving growth ambitions in the US market. The company also announced that Jaguar's new luxury four-door GT-Type 01 will be unveiled later this year.
JLR reiterated its previously announced commitment to invest £18 billion through FY29 as it continues to expand its product portfolio and accelerate its transformation strategy.
According to management, the long-term ambition is to grow the US business to the size of JLR's entire global business today. The company also plans to continue investing in high-growth markets such as India and West Asia.
Jaguar Land Rover contributes more than 70 per cent of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles' total revenue, making its financial performance a critical factor for investor sentiment.
Ahead of the investor day, BofA Securities maintained its "Underperform" rating on Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles with a target price of Rs 335.
The brokerage said investors were focused on understanding JLR's margin recovery roadmap and noted that several structural factors continue to complicate the profitability outlook.
According to BofA, structural drags remain a key challenge for JLR's efforts to improve margins over the medium term.
The brokerage said company-specific initiatives such as the cost-out programme and successful execution of new product launches will be critical in supporting earnings growth and improving profitability.
BofA added that self-help measures, including cost reductions and product refreshes, will play an important role in determining whether JLR can achieve its long-term financial targets.
While JLR's management remains optimistic about growth opportunities across North America, India and West Asia, investors appear to be looking for stronger evidence of sustainable margin expansion.
The launch of new Jaguar models, growth in the Defender franchise and progress on cost optimisation initiatives are likely to remain key areas of focus for the market in the coming quarters.
