Telecom stocks saw active trade on Tuesday, led by Vodafone Idea Ltd, which surged to an eight-month high on heavy volumes, and Bharti Airtel Ltd, which extended its recent uptrend amid robust buying interest. The gains came after fresh data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) showed a steady improvement in subscriber additions across operators in August.
Shares of Vodafone Idea jumped 8 per cent to touch Rs 9.20 on the BSE, their highest level since February 2025. The counter saw strong participation, with more than a billion shares traded across exchanges. At 1:30 PM, the stock was up 7 per cent at Rs 9.05, adding to a sharp recovery of over 40 per cent from its August lows.
The rally came even as TRAI data showed the telco lost 3.08 lakh subscribers in August. However, the pace of decline moderated to 0.15 per cent from 0.18 per cent in July, suggesting that customer attrition is stabilising.
The latest TRAI report showed that India added 35 lakh new wireless users in August, sharply higher than 4.8 lakh in July. Reliance Jio led the growth with 19.5 lakh new subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel with 4.9 lakh additions. BSNL also posted a strong performance, adding 13.8 lakh users during the month.
Overall wireless subscriptions rose to 116.7 crore, signalling sustained demand for data and connectivity services. Analysts said the strong industry-wide growth reflects a healthy recovery in user engagement and digital adoption.
Shares of Bharti Airtel rose 1.28 per cent to close at Rs 1,928 after hitting a day’s high of Rs 1,939.40. The counter remained among the most active stocks of the day, clocking a traded volume of 1.53 million shares and a traded value of around Rs 29,377.93 lakh.
Over the last three sessions, the stock has advanced 3.23 per cent, and continues to trade above all key moving averages, reflecting strong technical strength. The telecom major has also secured a multi-year cybersecurity contract from Indian Railways Security Operations Centre (IRSOC), underlining its growing presence in enterprise digital solutions.
With a market capitalisation of Rs 10.90 trillion, Bharti Airtel remains a key large-cap performer in the telecom space.
