TCS, Bharti Airtel, 3 other blue-chip firms lose Rs 1.51 lakh crore market value in a week

Stock Market Weekly Update: Domestic equity benchmarks suffered mild losses in the trading week from February 17 to February 21, as foreign institutional investors’ return to a selling spree following brief buying and weak global cues continued to hurt sentiment on Dalal Street.

How Did Dalal Street Fare Last Week?

During the February 17-21 trading week, the Nifty 50 lost 133.4 points, or 0.6 per cent, while the Sensex fell 628.2 points, or 0.8 per cent.

Out of the top 10 largest domestic companies by market capitalisation—or market value, eight registered weekly losses with the top five costing investors Rs 1.51 lakh crore, according to provisional exchange data.

The five blue-chip firms were: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) and Infosys.

TCS, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, HUL, Infosys lose Rs 1.51 lakh crore in mcap

The market value—also known as mcap in market parlance—of TCS declined by about Rs 53,186 crore, and that of Bharti Airtel declined by Rs 44,408 crore.

ICICI Bank and HUL lost Rs 18,235.5 crore and Rs 17,963 crore in market capitalisation for the week.

Infosys—the country’s second largest IT firm after TCS—lost Rs 17,087 crore of market value during this period.

At the end of the trading week, the mcaps of the five companies stood as follows:

• TCS: Rs 13,69,717.5 crore
• Bharti Airtel: Rs 9,34,223.8 crore
• ICICI Bank: Rs 8,70,579.7 crore
• HUL: Rs 5,26,684.4 crore
• Infosys: Rs 7,53,700.2 crore

What Next on Dalal Street?

With the earnings season now out of the way, investors await a key GDP reading—due on Friday—for domestic cues. Globally, a weaker-than-expected business activity reading from the US has led investors to worry about growth amid concerns on the global trade front given US President Donald Trump’s aggressive stance on the matter.

The 47th President of the US has signalled that the world's largest economy will replicate the tariff policies of its trading partners.
