Nifty, Sensex Today: The Indian stock market opened on a muted note on Wednesday, tracking cautious global sentiment.

The BSE Sensex started slightly lower at 84,607.49. At 9:16 am, the index was at 84,646.57, down 19.71 points or 0.02 per cent. The index had closed at 84,666.28 in the previous session.

The Nifty 50 opened at 25,864.05, the same level where it was trading at 9:16 am. The index was up 24.40 points or 0.09 per cent from the previous close of 25,839.65.

Top gainers and losers

Early trade saw buying in large-cap names such as Trent, Bajaj Finserv, M&M, Ultratech Cement, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints, Adani Ports, and HCL Tech on the Sensex.

On the downside, BEL, Bharti Airtel, Eternal, Titan, Sun Pharma, L&T, and ICICI Bank were among the top losers.

Broader markets and sectors

The broader markets were positive, with the Nifty MidCap index up 0.26 per cent and the Nifty SmallCap index higher by 0.24 per cent.

Among sectors, the Nifty Metal index gained 0.4 per cent, Nifty Realty rose 0.36 per cent, and the Nifty Auto index inched up 0.12 per cent.

In contrast, the Nifty PSU Bank index slipped 0.23 per cent.

Global cues and flows

Wall Street ended lower in overnight trade, keeping investor sentiment cautious.

FIIs remained net sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 3,760.08 crore on Tuesday, while DIIs turned buyers with inflows of Rs 6,224.89 crore.

Commodities

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, edged up 0.15 per cent to USD 62.03 per barrel.
