Stock Market Holiday: NSE, BSE to stay closed today, Here’s the reason

Stock Market Holiday Today: Indian stock exchanges will remain closed on Thursday, January 15, 2026, due to municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra.
Trading in the equity segment, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, commodities and electronic gold receipts will be suspended on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE.

In a circular issued on Monday, the NSE said January 15 has been notified as a trading holiday in the capital market segment on account of the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections. The exchange said this was a partial modification to an earlier circular, which had classified the day as only a settlement holiday while allowing trading.

BSE also separately announced a full trading holiday for January 15 due to the civic polls in the state.
Indian exchanges typically observe around 15 trading holidays in a calendar year, apart from regular weekly closures on Saturdays and Sundays.

The trading holiday coincides with the Maharashtra government’s decision to declare January 15 a public holiday in Mumbai for the civic elections. The holiday applies to government and semi-government offices, corporations, boards, public sector undertakings, banks and central government offices falling under the jurisdiction of the civic bodies.

Meanwhile, voting is underway in 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, with Mumbai in focus. Polling began at 7.30 am and will conclude at 5.30 pm.

A total of 2,869 seats across 893 wards are being contested. Around 3.48 crore eligible voters will decide the fate of 15,931 candidates. These elections are being held after a gap of several years, as the terms of most municipal corporations had ended between 2020 and 2023.

Voting is taking place in major civic bodies including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nagpur, Nashik, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar, Ulhasnagar and several others across the state.

Separately, January 15 is also an active earnings day, with companies such as Jio Financial Services, HDFC Life Insurance and

Angel One scheduled to announce their December quarter results. However, any market reaction to these earnings will be reflected only when trading resumes.
