Equity benchmark indices recovered sharply in late afternoon trade on Wednesday, with Sensex closing higher by over 940 points from the day’s low and Nifty ending above the 24,330 level, led by gains in banking stocks.
The BSE Sensex rose 940.73 points, or 1.22 per cent, to close at 77,958.52, while the Nifty 50 gained 298.15 points, or 1.24 per cent, to settle at 24,330.95.
The market erased early losses and rose more than 1 per cent after reports indicated that Iran and the United States are nearing an agreement to ease tensions in the Middle East. The development led to a decline in global oil prices, boosting investor sentiment.
Among top gainers, IndiGo rose 6.60 per cent, followed by Trent up 4.09 per cent, Asian Paints up 3.56 per cent, State Bank of India up 3.38 per cent and HDFC Bank up 3.11 per cent.
Axis Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, ICICI Bank and Maruti Suzuki also gained in the range of 2 to 3 per cent. Tata Steel, Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Adani Ports, Tech Mahindra, UltraTech Cement and Bharat Electronics also ended higher.
On the losing side, Reliance Industries fell 1.80 per cent, followed by Larsen & Toubro down 1.18 per cent, Power Grid Corporation down 1.11 per cent, NTPC down 1.00 per cent, HCLTech down 0.97 per cent and Infosys down 0.88 per cent. Hindustan Unilever, Titan, ITC and other select stocks also ended in the red.
Broader markets ended higher on May 06, 2026, with strong gains across segments. Nifty 50 rose 1.24 per cent to 24,330.95, while Nifty Next 50 gained 1.51 per cent. Nifty Midcap 50 advanced 2.21 per cent, Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1.76 per cent, and Nifty Midcap 150 gained 1.70 per cent.
Among small-cap indices, Nifty Smallcap 50 rose 2.06 per cent, Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 1.93 per cent, and Nifty Smallcap 250 advanced 1.81 per cent. Nifty MidSmallcap 400 climbed 1.73 per cent.
Other broader indices also ended in the green, with Nifty 100 up 1.29 per cent, Nifty 200 up 1.38 per cent, Nifty 500 up 1.43 per cent and Nifty LargeMidcap 250 gaining 1.50 per cent. Nifty Mid Select rose 2.60 per cent, while Nifty Microcap 250 added 1.61 per cent.
Sectoral indices ended higher on May 06, 2026, with broad-based buying across banking, financial services and auto stocks.
Nifty Auto rose 2.41 per cent, while Nifty Bank and Nifty Financial Services both gained 2.63 per cent. Nifty Financial Services 25/50 index also advanced 2.61 per cent. Nifty Private Bank rose 2.42 per cent, and Nifty PSU Bank climbed 2.84 per cent.
Among other sectors, Nifty Pharma gained 2.30 per cent, Nifty Realty rose 2.63 per cent, Nifty Healthcare Index advanced 1.78 per cent, and Nifty Media added 1.36 per cent. Nifty Metal rose 1.08 per cent, and Nifty IT gained 0.55 per cent.
However, Nifty FMCG ended lower by 0.26 per cent, while Nifty Oil and Gas rose marginally by 0.17 per cent. Nifty Consumer Durables gained 0.87 per cent. Broader financial and mid-small financial indices also ended higher, with gains of over 2 per cent, while the Nifty IT Services index rose 3.06 per cent.
The market ended higher on May 06, 2026, with broad-based positive participation. A total of 3,374 stocks were traded during the session, out of which 2,457 stocks advanced, while 843 declined and 74 remained unchanged.
Market breadth remained strong, with 143 stocks hitting their 52-week high and 18 stocks touching their 52-week low. On the circuit front, 123 stocks hit the upper circuit, while 61 stocks were locked in the lower circuit. Total market capitalisation on NSE stood at Rs 473 lakh crore.
