Indian stock markets ended lower on Friday after a volatile session, as early gains were erased during the day. The Sensex slipped 160.73 points or 0.21 per cent to close at 75,237.99, while the Nifty declined 46.10 points or 0.19 per cent to settle at 23,643.50.

Markets had opened higher and traded in positive territory in morning deals, but later turned weak as the rupee fell to a fresh record low against the US dollar, oil prices extended gains, and global markets declined.

Among stocks, Tata Steel and Reliance Industries fell around 2 per cent each and were among the top laggards, weighing on the benchmark indices.

Top Gainers and Losers

Market breadth was mixed, with gains in select IT and FMCG stocks offset by losses in metals, banking and heavyweights. Tech Mahindra rose 2.04 per cent, Infosys gained 1.95 per cent, Power Grid added 1.29 per cent, Maruti Suzuki rose 1.13 per cent, and Bharti Airtel advanced 1.10 per cent.

Adani Ports, Kotak Bank, Hindustan Unilever, TCS, Sun Pharma, IndiGo, ITC, Titan and HCL Technologies also ended in the green.

On the losing side, Tata Steel fell 1.92 per cent, State Bank of India declined 1.87 per cent, Reliance Industries dropped 1.67 per cent and Ultratech Cement lost 1.63 per cent.

Among other laggards, Eternal, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Bel, Trent, Axis Bank, Asian Paints, Bajaj Finserv, NTPC, Bajaj Finance, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank ended lower.

Nifty Broad Market Indices

The Nifty Next 50 declined 0.94 per cent, while the Nifty 100 slipped 0.33 per cent. The Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 ended lower by 0.36 per cent each.

Among broader markets, pressure was more visible. The Nifty Midcap 50 fell 0.49 per cent, while the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 150 declined 0.45 per cent and 0.44 per cent, respectively.

Small-cap indices also ended in the red. The Nifty Smallcap 50 fell 0.53 per cent, the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined 0.61 per cent, and the Nifty Smallcap 250 slipped 0.39 per cent.

Other indices also closed lower, including the Nifty Microcap index, which fell 0.37 per cent. The Nifty LargeMidcap and Nifty Mid Select indices declined 0.39 per cent and 0.68 per cent, respectively.

Nifty Sectoral Indices

The Nifty IT index rose 1.30 per cent, while the Nifty Media index gained 1.98 per cent. The Nifty FMCG index advanced 0.54 per cent and the Nifty Pharma index rose 0.34 per cent. Healthcare and chemicals indices also ended in the green.

On the other hand, the Nifty Metal index fell 1.93 per cent, while the Nifty PSU Bank index declined 1.80 per cent. The Nifty Realty index slipped 1.79 per cent and the Nifty Oil and Gas index dropped 1.67 per cent.

Banking and financial stocks were under pressure, with the Nifty Bank index falling 0.77 per cent and the Nifty Financial Services index declining 0.51 per cent. The Nifty Private Bank index also ended lower.

In broader industrial segments, the Nifty Cement index fell 1.09 per cent, while REITs declined 1.51 per cent.

Stock Market Update

Indian stock markets witnessed a mixed session on Friday, with participation across a large number of stocks. A total of 3,366 stocks were traded on the NSE, of which 1,219 advanced, 2,028 declined, and 119 remained unchanged.

Market breadth was weak, with more stocks falling than rising. During the session, 83 stocks touched their 52-week high, while 39 stocks hit their 52-week low. In circuit limits, 70 stocks hit the upper circuit, while 88 stocks slipped to the lower circuit.

The overall market capitalisation on the NSE stood at Rs 463.15 lakh crore as of 14 May 2026.
