The central government has announced plans for the implementation of the fifth-generation Kavach train protection system for the suburban railway network in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The deployment of Kavach 5.0 will not only enhance security in the service but also aid efficiency. Projects to the tune of nearly Rs 17,000 crore are underway at a rapid pace, spanning more than 300 KMs of new lines, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said last week.

Kavach 5.0 is the latest version of an indigenously developed automatic train protection system.
Railway authorities adopted Kavach as the national automatic train protection system in 2020.
The introduction of Kavach 5.0 is set to enhance the safety and operational efficiency of the Mumbai suburban train network—popularly known as the Mumbai Local.
'Better infra, better technology, better trains,' says Indian Railways
Last Friday, Union Railways Minister Vaishnav and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made a number of announcements aimed at boosting infrastructure, improving technology and enhancing the experience in trains across the state.
Initiatives worth nearly Rs 17,000 crore are currently underway, aimed at decongesting existing lines, improving service frequency and catering to the ever-growing demand of Mumbai’s suburban commuters, according to an official statement.

Kavach 5.0 seen significantly reducing inter-train headway, enabling more trains to run safely & efficiently
The Union Minister also announced a project to double the Gondia–Ballarshah railway line with an investment of Rs 4,819 crore. A strategic corridor stretching 240 kilometres, this project is set to connect Vidarbha with Marathwada while strengthening the state's rail connectivity with Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

This transformative project is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing passenger and freight connectivity between the northern and southern parts of the country, said the minister.
